Volunteer as a Flag Football Coach at Clarington Flag Football

You do not need to be a football expert. You need to show up, be positive, and help young athletes enjoy the game. We will give you everything else you need - including certification support if you need it.

Why Coach With Clarington Flag Football?

You do not need a coaching resume. You need a love for the game and a willingness to show up for kids. Here is what you get in return.

What Coaches Do

Coaches lead their team on game nights at South Courtice Arena. The core commitment is one Tuesday evening per week for games.

What We Provide

All coaches receive the official NFL FLAG coaching guide, access to drills and play diagrams, and support from the league coordinator. All coaches are required to complete a background check through the Durham Region online screening system prior to the season.

Do I Need Experience?

No. Many of our best coaches are parents who love the game and love working with athletes. If you are enthusiastic and reliable, we want to hear from you.

You Will Change a Kid's Life

Most athletes remember their coaches long after they forget the scores. The coach who believed in them, pushed them, and made practice fun is the one they talk about years later. That coach can be you.

You Will Grow as a Leader

Coaching teaches you how to communicate, motivate, problem-solve under pressure, and build a team from scratch. These are skills that carry into every part of your life. Parents who coach often say it changed them as much as it changed their athletes.

You Get to Play the Game You Love

If you grew up watching football, this is your chance to be part of it. Calling plays, drawing up formations, watching your team execute a drive you designed together there is nothing quite like it. And yes, it is just as exciting as it sounds.

We Give You Everything You Need

You get the official NFL FLAG coaching guide, access to play diagrams and drill libraries, and direct support from our league coordinator. We can connect you with coach training and certification resources so that you can be the best coach for our athletes.

Your Community Needs You

Clarington Flag Football only runs because parents and community members step up and coach. Every team needs a coach. Without coaches, kids do not get to play. It is that simple. If you have ever thought about it, now is the time.

Become A Coach

Fill this in and we will reach out before the season starts with everything you need to know. All coaches are required to complete a background check through the Durham Region online screening system prior to the season.

We Already Built Your Playbook

One of the best parts about coaching in an NFL FLAG affiliated league is that the NFL has already done the heavy lifting for you. The official NFL FLAG Football Playbook covers every formation, route, and play concept you need for a full season. You do not need to invent anything. You just need to teach it.

Offensive Formations

The NFL FLAG playbook covers ten core formations: Single Back, Spread, Bunch, Trips, Twins, I Formation, Double Back Set, Trips Stack, Twins Stack, and Single Set. Each formation is designed to create mismatches against youth defenses and can be adapted for both 5-on-5 and 7-on-7 play.

Route Tree

All plays are built around a numbered route tree. Routes 0 through 5 are short to intermediate: flat, quick out, slant, comeback, curl, and in. Routes 6 through 9 are deep: corner, post, fly, and wheel. Teaching your players the route numbers is the fastest way to call plays on the sideline without tipping off the defense.

Play Calling Tips

Start your season with 8 to 10 plays and master them before adding more. Pick one play per formation so your athletes build confidence through repetition. Use motion and crossing routes to create open receivers rather than relying on one-on-one matchups. Keep your play calls short and consistent so athletes can remember them under pressure.

Coaching the Quarterback

The QB has 7 seconds to release the ball. Coach them to scan the field from their primary receiver to their secondary read before checking down to the centre. Footwork matters even in flag football. A proper drop and set gives your QB better throwing angles and more time to find the open receiver.

Defensive Concepts

NFL FLAG rules allow a maximum of two designated rushers per play. All other defenders must play coverage. Teach your players to identify the rusher, find their assigned receiver, and stay between the receiver and the end zone. Zone coverage works well at younger ages. Man coverage is more effective as players develop athleticism and awareness.

Practice Structure

Most NFL FLAG games include a short pre-game practice. Use the first 10 minutes for warm-up and flag-pulling drills. Spend the next 10 minutes running your top 3 plays at half speed so every player knows their assignment. Save the last 5 minutes for a quick team talk and game-day reminders. Consistency in your practice routine builds confidence and reduces errors.
